Episode 33: March 2, 2004 - London Central 2,140 Baie Verte 190

Finally, what I can almost definitively say is the oldest record in the Smart Ask record book (set all the way back in Episode number 2) has been broken. Two thousand, one hundred and forty points. Nice!

It was only a matter of time before it did fall, but it was incredible to watch London Central go on amazing runs in both the 50 and Lightning Rounds.

If there was a turning point, it was the geography category to open the 50 point round. You might not know this, but Will was a national finalist in the Great Canadian Geography Challenge last year (Bonus question: Name the other 2 finalists that have appeared in the last 4 episodes). And the Central question run went from 1, to 5, to 8, and by the time the buzzer went on Smarterer, Central had taken 14 straight questions and 670 of 670 possible points. After that, it was just a case of how high could Central go. And, well, they went pretty high.

It would be nice to have full Season 1 statistics though just to see how many records this Central team broke tonight...I'm guessing that a lot did fall though.

It's too bad Baie Verte had to deal with this juggernaut above them, it would be interesting to see what they would have done against normal opposition. Personally, I think the fact that Newfoundland teams are drawing buzz-saws is some interesting (and very justified) karma from the Trivia Gods.
